MAC with Sleeping Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

NA Cheng-liang · Radio and communications technology · 2007

Because of low power capacity of each sensor node in wireless sensor networks, there must be effective medium access control(MAC)protocols to keep high energy-efficiency.Introducing sleeping algorithm in MAC protocols is an important manner of saving energy.Presently there have been many kinds of MAC with sleeping protocols for wireless sensor networks. There are mainly two classes of protocols:one class is sleeping/listening scheduled MAC protocols such as S-MAC protocol;the other class is lower power listening MAC protocols such as WiseMAC protocol. In this paper,we describe several typical MAC with sleeping protocols for wireless sensor networks, emphasizing their advantages and disadvantages. Then we compare these MAC protocols and give a summary on it.
