Objective To investigate the effects of different physiological states in partial epileptic patients or normal persons on information transmission in the cerebral cortex, and to compare the differences among different conditions. Method The method described by Vastano JA and Swinney HL was used to calculate the information transmission time series in human cerebral cortex basing on the electroencephalogram (EEG). The complexity measures of the time series were calculated and were used to characterize the information contents in the time series. Then the complexity values during different physiological states were compared. Result It was observed that there were some interesting contrasts between the values in normal persons and partial epileptic patients, as well as those between the values before and during seizure. The information transmission activities among the various leads in normal subjects approached to randomization;the differences appeared about 3~7 s before the seizure, and the complexity values became high (P0.05)between one epileptic and one other lead in epileptic patients, and the values were apparently higher(P0.01)between two epileptic leads in epileptic patient during seizure. They were also apparently higher(P0.01)during seizure than those in normal persons;on the contrary, they were significantly lower between two non epileptic leads. Conclusion The results suggest that the method may be a new potential way to understand human brain functions and could be used in predicting epileptic seizure and in the research or diagnosis of partial epilepsy disease.
