The rheological properties and electrolyte resistance of the traditional alkali-soluble acrylic thickeners are not good.A kind of associat-ed thickeners with using ethyl acrylate(EA),meth-acrylic acid(MAA)and meth-acrylic methyl ester(MMA)as the main monomers, reactive sur-factant as functional monomer has been synthesized by means of emulsion polymerization. The effect of the reactive surfactant dosage on the properties of the thickener is discussed, and comparison between associated thickener and non-associated thickener is carried out,its thickening properties, electrolyte resistance are superior to non-associated thickener. The results show that the association structures have formed between thickener molecules by the introduction of hydrophobic groups to the molecular chain of acrylate copolymer, therefore the electrolyte resistance and rheological properties of the thickeners are improved.
