A new hybrid approach for the cavity boundary extraction of ultrasonic images

The paper presents a new hybrid algorithm for the cavity boundary extraction of ultrasonic images. The proposed algorithm first transforms the ultrasonic image into a feature space using higher order statistics.A morphological filter is then used to merge small dark holes and bright patches in the obtained feature image to get an initial contour. Finally, the initial contour is input to the Snake model and begins its evolvement to the interested cavity boundary.Experimental results are also provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm.
