Scalable Fast Forwarding Based on Output Port Coding

Zhang Hongkeb · Journal of Beijing Jiaotong University · 2009

This paper proposes a router Output Port Code based Forwarding(OPCF) approach, which can forward data packets directly according to the Output Port Code(OPC) in their headers via establishing the connection-oriented OPC paths in advance.OPCF is an explicit routing based flexible fast forwarding approach, which avoids routing lookup in data packets forwarding and can improve network QoS performance and traffic engineering ability. Moreover, since besides the routing tables,no extra information needs to be stored and managed in routers,OPCF achieves good scalability. As IP address information can be hidden in the data packets transmission,OPCF tends to enhance network security.Experiments performed on a prototype show that our scheme obtains lower end-to-end delay than MPLS and can increase network throughput effectively.
