Locating TCP packet loss

Packet loss may cause the degradation of network and application performance. Detecting packet loss location will help network management. This paper proposes a method called HPDPL to analyse TCP packet loss based on single point's passive measurement. This method can locate loss position and infer loss rates based on IP header's ID field, TCP header's sequence and packets' s interval. It builds a testbed to evaluate the accuracy and performance of the algorithm, and analyzes reordering rates and loss rates based on the trace collected from CERNET.
