The steady-state behavior of dynamic process expressed by qualitative algebra equations is an important application of qualitative simulation. The solution and application of qualitative algebra is a significant area of qualitative simulation. It has been proved that the signed directed graph(SDG)is an effective and practical method to solve the qualitative algebra equation in many application areas.Based on the literature review of the research advance in SDG method, the localization of tries-and-errors method for algebra was analyzed.Extending from qualitative algebra to describing steady-state behavior of dynamic process and combining the advantage of SDG,SDG was regarded as a promising qualitative simulation method, which has made breakthroughs in HAZOP analysis, safety evaluation, intelligent self-explanatory training simulator and shown obvious advantages in fault diagnosis. The algorithmic procedures for online fault diagnosis using SDG method were discussed.Furthermore, according to the current shortages of SDG method, some suggestions about the research and development of SDG method were put forward in order to improve the accuracy of fault diagnosis.
