Fast and efficient disparity estimation and compensation are the key technique in stereo video processing. The constraints on disparity distribution and correlations among disparity vectors were first analyzed, including the constraints of the epipolar lines and directions, the temporal correlation among inter-frame disparity vectors and spatial correlation among intra-frame disparity vectors. The correlation between block selection modes in H.264 was utilized to optimize the strategy of disparity estimation.Experimental results showed that,as compared with the full search algorithm, the fast algorithm proposed in the paper is more effective regarding computing complexity while the quality of reconstructed images is close to the one by means of the full search method.
