Loss-Driven on-Line Algorithm for Backup Scheduling

Yang Xue-jun · Mini-micro Systems · 2005

Backup/Restore is one of the most important techniques to ensure data reliability of information systems. Traditional backup scheduling algorithms mostly use predefined periods to schedule backup operations, which is not flexible. This paper presents a loss-driven on-line algorithm for backup scheduling which can dynamically adjust backup time according to the current storage workload of the concerned data. Sprite Trace-driven simulation results show that the loss-driven on-line algorithm can obviously reduce the average loss when compared with the periodic backup scheduling algorithm.
