The Effects of the Latency and Media-access Asymmetry on TCP Performance

Qiu Hong · 2001

In this paper, we study the effects of latency and media access asymmetry on TCP performance and suggest a technique to improve the quality of the performance. The connection through traversing WLAN suffers from large variations in round trip time caused by the half duplex nature of the radios and asymmetries in the media access protocol. This adversely affects TCP's loss recovery mechanism and result in a degraded performance. We propose an ACK filtering scheme to improve TCP performance in this cases.
