Test method for nominal discharge current and discharge capacity of surge protection device
Xu Ying · Guangdong Electric Power · 2005
This paper points out that the surge protection device (SPD) is solely a protecting element and only performs the voltage-limiting function in the five major technical measures of lightning protection for electronic information systems in buildings. Setting the nominal discharge current (I_n ) of SPD at 30 kA,40 kA,60 kA,80 kA and 100 kA is unnecessary,as setting I_n of SPD at 5 kA,10 kA,20 kA can satisfy general demands. As for the test method of the maximum discharge capacity of SPD with I_n being 5 kA,10 kA,20 kA at 8/20 μs,it is suggested that the impulse current of 10 kA,20 kA,40 kA at 8/20 μs be adopted, and the impulses be made for 4×5 times,i.e. in 4 groups and 5 times per group; the groups should be arranged at 25~30 min intervals and the impulses in each group at 1 min intervals. This method is convenient and can ensure enough accumulated thermal effect of discharge energy of SPD.
