Yang Jian · Studies in the History of Natural Sciences · 2003

The National Research Institute of Physics of Academia Sinica, which was founded in 1928 , was the first research institute on physics in modern China. Ding Xielin was the first director of the institute. This article shows the characteristics of the researches in the institute by reviewing the works on a new pendulum and gravity balance which were done by Ding Xielin and his colleagues. They took into consideration both doing scientific research and directing, supporting as well as rewarding academic research as a national institute, and attended to the capital construction of the institute when they made research plans and developed them in the early days.
