Applying Genetic Algorithm in Intrusion Detection System: A Comprehensive Review

Information Systems and Networks are subjected to electronic attacks. When network attacks hit, organizations are thrown into crisis mode. From the IT department to call centers, to the board room and beyond, all are fraught with danger until the situation is under control. Traditional methods which are used to overcome these threats (e.g. firewall, antivirus software, password protection etc.) do not provide complete security to the system. This encourages the researchers to develop an Intrusion Detection System which is capable of detecting and responding to such events. This review paper presents a comprehensive study of Genetic Algorithm (GA) based Intrusion Detection System (IDS). It provides a brief overview of rule-based IDS, elaborates the implementation issues of Genetic Algorithm and also presents a comparative analysis of existing studies.
