An unequal error protection scheme for speech signals using turbo codes

Xiao Qu · Information technology newsletter · 2013

In this paper,a novel unequal error protection(UEP) scheme for speech signals is proposed.Importance analysis is first conducted for the eight bits of each sampling point of the input speech signal after pulse code modulation(PCM).Then, the puncture procedure of the traditional Turbo codes is modified through adding parities for the bits with higher importance and keeping the coding rate unchanged.Compared with equal error protection(EEP),the proposed UEP scheme can provide better performance of error protection for the whole speech signal and achieve satisfactory segment SNR values. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
