In video compression coding standard of H.264,there are 9 modes for 4×4 Intra prediction. It adopts Full Search algorithm,in which Rata Distortion Optimization technique is used to choose the best mode for a 4×4 block.Although the Full Search algorithm can get the best code quality,it needs a large amount of computation. Therefore it is restricted in practical application. On the foundation of the analysis of 4×4 Intra prediction of H.264 and the steps of the Full Search algorithm, aimed at the shortcomings of the large amount of computation in Full Search algorithm, this paper proposes a fast mode decision algorithm based on the position of every 4×4 block and the correlation among the direction of different modes. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can maximally save the coding time of 34.5% with 0.035 dB PSNR degradation.
