The fixed phrase shuō shi(说是) initiating a minor sentence is the joint result of grammaticalization and lexicalization.This paper studies the process and mechanism of fixation of the phrase shuō shi,and analyzes how shuō shi2 predicting a turn in speech was derived from shuō shi1 indicating quotation.It has analyzed the function of shuō shi as an indirect quotation marker and an evidential marker and compared it with shuō.
