Fast Inter Mode Decision Algorithm Based on the Intrinsic Complexity of the Macroblock

A fast inter mode decision algorithm is proposed to reduce the computation complexity of mode deci- sion procedure during coding process.Specifically,motion estimation for the current 16×16 MB is made,and then the intrinsic complexity of the MB whose motion vector is not zero is estimated by means of computing the energy of its AC coefficients.Based on the above analysis,only parts of inter prediction modes are chosen ac- cording to the intrinsic complexity as candidate modes.Experimental results show that the proposed method can efficiently reduce the coding time by 33% on average without sacrificing picture quality and compression ratio.
