Studies of Chinese prosodic grammar have roughly undergone 3 phases:the phase of preliminary exploration(before the 1990s),the booming phase(after the 1990s)and the phase of thorough research(since the beginning of the 21st century). However, there is no clear cut between the three. The latter two represent two ways for prosodic grammar studies:one is to seek explaination from a syntactic perspective;the other is to seek explaination from semantic and cognitive pespectives. After reviewing some of the prominent theories of prosodic grammar and studies of Chinese prosodic grammar, the article proposes that behind interaction between prosody and grammar, there is interaction between semantics and pragmatics. And it is feasible to explain the phenomenon of restriction of prosody on grammar from perspectives of cognition, semantics and pragmatics.
