This paper proposes a two-phase scheme for removing salt-and-pepper impulse noise. In the first phase, an adaptive median filter based algorithm is used to identify pixels which are likely to be contaminated by noise. In the second phase, the image is restored by a stepwise method which repairs each noise pixel using its eight closet neighbors. Simulation is be done for all various noise density from 10% to 95%, and the results show that the proposed algorithm can restrain salt-and-pepper noise with detail-preserving, especially for high noise level. Also this paper proposed some efficient optimizing strategy which reduces the computation complexity. This make the proposed algorithm fit for real-time application.
