The Application of the Watershed Transformation in Medical Image Segmentation

The watershed transformation is a powerful morphological tool for image segmentation, which can automatically generate a series of closed segmentation regions. The two description methods of the watershed transformation (that is, Immersion Simulation and Toboggan Approach) and their algorithm implements are summarized in detail in this paper. About its over-segmentation phenomenon, the gradient image is preprocessed before the transformation and regions are merged after the transformation in their major methods, then, the application of the watershed transformation in medical image segmentation is introduced, and finally, its main direction for further research is pointed out.
