Review and prospect on infrared/visible image registration

Infrared/visible image registration is the common multi-modal image registration,and it has been widely applied to lots of fields such as military and remote sensing.So,it is necessary to review the current research situation of infrared/visible image registration.After depicting the problem of infrared/visible image registration,general methods of image registration is described briefly.They are divided into two types:area-based methods and feature-based methods.SIFT algorithm and SURF algorithm in local invariant features are mainly discussed.According to time of literature publishing,the analysis and review for infrared/visible image registration methods at home and abroad are carried out in detail.Then the difficulties of infrared/visible image registration technique are summarized and evaluated.At last,prospects of infrared/visible image registration are made,and the future research on this field could pay more attention to construct invariant and modality-insensitive features and their descriptors on the basis of research of SIFT algorithm and SURF algorithm.
