A Contrastive Study of Semantic Prosody of Near Synonyms:A Bilingual Perspective

This paper explores the semantic prosodic features of a group of near synonyms in English and their equivalents in Chinese,drawing upon data from a parallel corpus and two comparable corpora.The results show that the semantic prosody of near synonyms in English and their translation equivalents in Chinese have similarities and differences,and tend to exhibit various degrees of correspondence in terms of collocation,connotative meaning,semantic preference,semantic prosody and prosodic strength.Similarities in semantic prosody are vital in establishing the correspondence of near synonyms from a cross-linguistic perspective.
