Multi-channel MAC protocols for wireless sensor networks:a survey

With rapid deployment and application of wireless sensor network technology in the area of industrial instrumentation and control,remote medical care,intelligent buildings,etc.,traditional contention-based MAC layer protocols using a single channel cannot satisfy low power consumption,high interference resistance,high reliability and predictable time delay requirements posed by these applications. The multi-channel based MAC protocol is a very promising approach to meet these challenges. In this article,we proposed a systematic way to categorized multi-channel MAC protocols and surveyed major multi-channel MAC protocols to the present. We also summarized the status of standardization efforts in this area and proposed several important research topics and future directions.
