A successive elimination algorithm (SEA) was implemented for tree structured motion estimation in H.264 to reduce the computational complexity. A simple, effective method was used to determine the initial motion vector search position utilizing the strong correlation between the partially overlapped variable-size blocks. The algorithm was improved by incorporating two fast motion vector determination criteria. The simulation results show that the block matching computations can be reduced by 80%~99% with identical performance to the full search algorithm. The improved SEA further reduces the block-matching computational complexity compared to the basic SEA, with the improved SEA requiring only 0.3%~4% of the computational time for the block matching distortion in comparison to the time for the full search algorithm, with negligible loss of image quality and negligible bitrate increase.
