Hybrid Scalar/Vector Median Filter for Pulse Noise Removal in Color Images

This paper proposes a new filtering approach for removing pulse noise in color images. The proposed approach uses either a scalar median filter or a vector median filter according to simple local texture analysis: when the local area is not heavily textured, a scalar filter is used; otherwise a vector filter is used. Since most natural images have a lowpass property, the proposed approach operates on the scalar mode most of the time. Experiments show that the proposed method provides comparable performance with much less computation requirement than a standard vector median filter.
