How the Link-Layer Retransmission Affects the TCP Performance in Wireless Ad hoc Networks

It is found that the reverse ACK(acknowledgement) segments will be defeated by the forward TCP(transmission control protocol) segments in the competition of wireless shared channel in IEEE 80211-based Ad hoc networks. Thus spurious TCP retransmission timeouts will happen periodically. The analysis under static topology proves that suitable link-layer retransmission limit, e.g. 5, can get optimal TCP performance. The optimum retransmission limit is related to the traffic load added in the network. The simulation under dynamic topology shows that different moving speed of nodes won't bring additional requirements on link-layer retransmission for higher TCP throughput.
