Variable block size motion compensation is adopted by emerging video coding standard H.264.It can represent the motion characteristic in a macro-block more accurately, and therefore, reduces the prediction error to achieve high compression gains. On the other hand,it causes high computational complexity in motion estimation at the encoder. This paper proposes and investigates fast variable size block motion estimation algorithm based on merge and split procedures based on H.264 video encoding. The experiment results show that the proposed method can reduce the search points by 4% of that of full search,as a result, reduce the computational amount without degradation in the rate distortion performance.
