Recently, there has been a growing interest of using network coding to improve the performance of wireless networks. This work begins with a thorough investigation of existing opportunistic network coding methods. On this basis,we propose a generic heuristic network coding protocol(GHNC) for multi-hop wireless networks. The proposed heuristic method involves three processes, that is,the opportunistic forwarder selection, throughput computing, and the dynamic adjustment mechanism. The main idea is to actively adjust change the number of the forwarders as network conditions change, and thus to maximize the network throughput. In addition,we propose a dynamic and fast heuristic network coding protocol(DHNC and FHNC),with focusing on dynamic characteristics and QoS requirements of wireless networks. Our simulation experiments demonstrate that the proposed GHNC,DHNC and FHNC provide a significant performance improvement in various network environments.
