An Analysis of Transformational Grammar from the Perspective of Cognitive Science
Huang He-bin · Waiguoyu · 2002
This paper attempts an analysis of Transformational Grammar from the perspective of cognitive science, i.e. cognitive principles, constituents and approaches. The paper provides a principled account of why the principles and approaches of TG to the study of language conform to the demands of cognitive science, and makes the point that the research approaches are very much similar to those of a developed natural science but fundamentally different from those of such a linguistic theory as cognitive linguistics. The paper holds that, from the perspective of cognitive science, many criticisms of TG are short of fair judgment and scientific proof, and that TG is a developing theory so that its vitality allows of no doubt.
