The characteristics of GPS method, which is used in building structural deformation monitoring, are compared to those of several conventional methods, indicating the shortcomings of conventional methods. This paper discusses the necessity and feasibility of the Digital Dynamic Deformation Monitoring and Evaluation System of Building Structural Health Diagnosis which consists of state-of-the-art sensor technology, data acquisition and communication technology of broadband network. This paper presents the structure of the system and describes the function of each subsystem including sensor, data sampling and processing, digital control, time service, diagnosis and safety evaluation. The system for building monitoring is compelling because of low requirement for station visualization,long-term and automated operation, accuracy of the automated sampling data, remote manipulation,long-term monitoring reliability, synchronized and directs monitoring. The application of the system can improve the safety of structures during operation using fingerprinting technology and promote the development of structural health diagnosis.
