Existence and Function of Residual Sound of a Piano
Zhiqiang Liang · Audio Engineering · 2006
In this paper, concepts of residual sound of a piano and residual sound time are proposed, the duration time of residual sound for several pianos of different type are measured and the factors affecting the residual sound of a piano are discussed. It is pointed out that the existence of residual sound of a piano is mainly determined by damp vibration of the string. The duration time is related to a series of factors. When a piano is played, the practical duration time felt by people is related to the reverberation time of the listening room too. Conclusions are obtained as follows: The existence of residual sound of a piano is inevitable and necessary. Before a piano is put into use, Its residual sound time needs to be appraised and it should be adjusted to rational range if it is abnormal.
