The Degree of Ambiguity and Syntactic Ambiguity Resolution

The self-paced word-by-word reading with a moving window display was used to test the relationship between the degree of ambiguity and syntactic ambiguity resolution.The material was composed of sentences with phrase of Nprofession title+Nkinship.The data showed that the phrase with high degree of ambiguity is more likely to draw attention of participants to the ambiguity structure than the phrase with low degree of ambiguity.Participants took more time to parse the phrase with high degree of ambiguity than they did on the condition of low degree of ambiguity.
