Using Corpus for Investigating the English Translations of a Chinese Common Word "Shi"

The paper reexamines the various English translations of a Chinese common worShiby using a new and efficient tool - the EC parallel corpus. Based on the data from the EC parallel corpus developed by Beijing Foreign Studies University and the online EC parallel corpus developed by Chinese Academy of Sciences, by analyzing and classifying the data containing the Chinese word Shi, we obtain six new translation methods of Shi. The new method based on parallel corpus offers more comprehensive and objective findings than the traditional subjective analysis.
