Internet traffic has advanced by leaps and bounds, making its characteristics change drastically and requiring its mathematical model to change also accordinly. A gamma distribution and multiple random dichotomy based network traffic simulating model was proposed based on real backbone network traffic fitting. Evaluation shows that the model illustrates the self-similar property of real backbone network traffic, and it provides the convenience to control the Hurst parameter of traffic generated. The model thus offers a new algorithm for traffic generating in network design and network device testing occasion.
