Preliminary technology analysis on implementing IEDs in substation based on IEC 61850

The biggest obstacle in substation automatic system (SAS) is to achieve the compatibility and interoperability of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) from different manufacturers, unless extra hardware (protocol converter) is adopted. For solving this problem, a standard (IEC61850) for networks and system communication within substations is worked out by IEC. On the basis of analyzing object-oriented modeling of IED, the implementation of IED in software and hardware platform is brought out in detail in this paper, and this will be helpful for researching and developing the uniformed IED standard in substation.
