A URL Shortening Service for Publishing

With vigorous growth of Internet, especially mobile Internet, the way of obtaining information has been reshaped by this IT revolution since two decades ago. More online resources make the publishing, in hard-copy or electronic version, face new challenges that knowledge and information can be distributed, shared amongst groups and referred to each other in a more convenient way. Focusing on the joint of short URL and publishing, the paper proposes a method to shorten a long URL intro a compact and user-friendly notation(URL4P). Lab works show that both conventional publishing and electronic online publishing will benefi ts from this kind of URL shortening service(USS). The merits for applying the USS to publishing are: 1) save lines and pages because fewer characters are necessary; 2) improve transmit between peers and reduce storage space; 3) quite easy to read, refer and search with concise strings. For printing with Quick Response Code(QR code), the USS also brings improvement to make the scanning higher effi ciency than ever.
