Symbol error rate of a variable gain MIMO AF relay system

A variable gain MIMO AF relay scheme is proposed,in which multi-antenna nodes perform antenna selection and beam-forming simultaneously. To reduce complexity and cost, the nodes choose only two antennas before beam-forming. The end-to-end symbol error rate(SER) of the scheme is analyzed over Rayleigh fading channels. The closed expression of SER is obtained when the source and destination nodes have more than two antennas respectively. Besides, the asymptotically approximated expression of SER is gained under high SNR conditions,from which the diversity order of such a system is derived. Finally,simulations are performed by MATLAB and the analytical results are confirmed.
