How to extend high-speed IP connectivity to the last mile is still an open and on-going research problem with no satisfactory solution.Wireless mesh networks(WMNs) technology have features of rapid deployment,low investment overhead,easy management,which many companies promoting as a full IP solution,also becoming an advanced research field all over the world.The definition of WMNs is not clear.The absence of network resource managements, service provisioning mechanisms and QoS guarantees,can block WMNs' widely development.In this paper,we give the common definition of WMNs,the describe of the WMNs' characters,the survey of classes,characteristic and design of the new routing protocols in WMNs.We hope the paper will guide future work and the development of a WMN routing protocol.
