Research progress in separators used in nickel metal hydride batteries

The characteristics of nylon fibre, polypropylene fibre and poly (vinyl formal) fibre which are used in nickel metal hydride batteries are summarized. Proper treatment for polymers could improve separators' hydrophilicity and its ability to absorb alkaline .The polymer separators that have OH-exchangeability can entirely absorb the solution which make the OH- move freely only in the solution and at the same time prevent metal ions of positive and negative electrode moving toward each other. It can restrain self-discharge and extend life cycle of the batteries. It is indicated that the polymer separators will be the focus of separator research in future, choosing the proper framework material, probing the good conditions of graft and improving the movement ability of the polymer chain will be the future development direction.
