In order to improve the utilization of on-board buffer resources in broadband satellite networks with on-board ATM(asynchronous transfer mode) switching,a cross-layer on-board buffer management strategy,ECTD(erroneous cell tail drop),which concerns non-real-time data services, was suggested. The strategy discards erroneous cells caused by satellite channel and the following cells that belong to the same protocol data unit. Two performance evaluating metrics: Goodput and effective throughput were adopted and ECTD was analyzed through simulations. Results show that ECTD improves the transferring efficiency of on-board switch and the utilization of download links and the improvement of effective throughput is much greater than that of Goodput.
