Virtual resource management in cloud data center is a vital guarantee for the cloud provider to provide fast and efficient service to the users. Virtual Machine(VM) management is one of the most important research areas in cloud data center resource management. Firstly, this paper deeply investigates and analyzes the current research developments of cloud data center virtual resource management and then focuses on VM placement methods, such as reservation VM placement, on-demand VM placement, and spot markets VM placement. Further, VM dynamic online migration techniques and VM server consolidation technologies are summarized. Finally, some future important research directions of VM management in the cloud data center are proposed including advanced distributed VM placement algorithm, VM network topologies, VM resource usage pattern exploitation, and thermal-aware dynamic VM consolidation strategies. Researchers can gain useful information about cloud data center VM management.
