Transmission Range Coverage Based Broadcasting in Wireless Sensor Networks

Broadcasting is one of the typical operations in wireless sensor networks.Blind flooding is simple, but generates too many unnecessary retransmissions.Probability-based,counter-based and location-based approaches do broadcasting without any neighbor knowledge, but the performance of those approaches is poor.MPR and most CDS-based approaches do broadcasting with 2-hop neighbor knowledge, and their performance improves obviously, but more communication overhead is required to obtain and maintain 2-hop neighbor knowledge. An approach to reduce retransmissions and communication overhead in broadcasting with 1-hop neighbor knowledge, called TRCB,is proposed basing on transmission range coverage and neighbor-designated. Approaches leveraging 1-hop neighbor knowledge can adapt topology changing with little communication overhead. Simulations show that TRCB reduces redundant retransmissions efficiently and outperforms Edge Forwarding Broadcasting (EFB) which also leverages 1-hop neighbor knowledge.
