Traditional model of cellular automata is implemented by the software.Subject to the characteristic of a processor which executes instructions sequentially and the special data structure of the cellular automata,it's hard to achieve both high speed and high precision. In this paper,we have implemented the model on a FPGA device. The hardware model can compute concurrently, and then significantly improve the computing speed. The rapid expansion of FPGA chips offers possibility for the realization of high precision. We designed a cellular automata hardware model and embedded it on a SOPC system as an IP core. Then we simulated the model under the control of a host computer.Hardware model can correctly perform the evolution algorithm in a clock period.Compared with the software model, the hardware model can significantly improve the efficiency of the simulation.
