To solve the problem of rapid depletion of some nodes as a result of uneven energy consumption in multi-sink sensor networks, a mechanism of dynamic path switching is proposed. This method adopted gradient protocol to calculate the cost field to the nearest and the sub-nearest sink node. After nearest and sub-nearest sink nodes being elected from each node, the network is further divided into clusters. The node which needed transmission would compare the power level in the upstream nodes and establish the route to the nearest or sub-nearest sink node by dynamically selecting a upstream node of a higher level as its next hop. Experimental results show that the proposed methods could be achieved under different source generation conditions to extend the survival period of the entire network.
