Application-level multicast(ALM),which has an advantage of deployment and implement, begins to attract wide attention.ALM protocols differ in the topology of the underlying overlay network(e.g.,tree,mesh or ring). Therefore, comparing the performance of ALM overlay networks is important towards assessing the advantages and disadvantage of each overlay network topology. The simu-lation of tree and ring based ALM overlay networks is conducted in NS-2.Simulation results shows that although a ring overlay network incurs a higher path stretch and a higher link stress than a tree overlay network,it provides a constant and lower node degree and a higher data delivery ratio under the failure/leaving of a single multicast group member than those provided by a tree overlay network.
