Birth-death model of IP multicast group behavior

The dynamic behavior law of IP multicast group members is valuable for multicast application especially multicast security. This paper focuses on the dynamic join-leave process of multicast group members, supposes the number of members be a time continuous, state discrete Markov process according to the non-mnemonic property of the members' join-leave behavior, and deduces the birth-death model of IP multicast group behavior using probability mathematic method. The model shows that times of members' joining and leaving group in a unit time are proportional to the number of multicast group members. The data collected from MBone was used to verify the modeling. The results prove the birth-death model can perfectly descript the join-leave behavior of the multicast group members.
