Research on the method of preventing metric from overflow in the DSP realization of Viterbi decode

At first, this paper gives out a brief introduction to the algorithm of branch metric in the Viterbi decoding process, then it focuses on the method to prevent metric from overflow on the chip TMS320C55X of TI. It proposes 3 methods including periodic shift, subtract the minimal metric and subtract the fixed metric. For each method, its capability is tested. And finally this paper sums up their characteristics and applicability.
