Data Mining for Operations: Expertise and Services
Alessandro Donati, Jose Martinez · SpaceOps 2016 Conference · 2016
The tremendous increase in mission complexity, illustrated by an increasing number of platform telemetry parameters (e.g. about 40000 for the GAIA mission), has pushed the parameters checking methods to their limits. The traditional "out-of-limit" check is only qualified to give operator warnings on single parameters failing in providing an informed diagnostic.Traditional methods applied in complex missions frequently cause operators to react quickly in an overload of data thus pushing human cognition to its limits.Relevant information and knowledge are necessary for the operators to easily raise their awareness on the different situations, including the capability of early warning.Following the ESA patented Novelty Detection for enhanced monitoring, and the DrMUST diagnostic tool, the 'ESA Data Analytics Team for Operations' (DATO) has been formalized. This paper focuses on the role and benefits of data analytics for operations and how the DATO will integrate its expertise and services in the space operations community of today's and tomorrow's missions.
