Influence of correlations of c and φ on slope stability

Zhang Bing-qiang · 2004

Based on the Bishop slices method for slope stability analysis, safety coefficient is assumed to be equal to (1.0)and the corresponding limit state equation is presented. Then according to the reliability theory, the cohesion and internal friction angle are regarded as random variables, and the calculating formula for the reliability index of slope stability is derived by the JC method. The soil mass is divided into slices using the Bishop method. The random field theory is introduced to soil section, and it relates the point variability to the space variability of the cohesion and internal friction angle. The cohesion and internal friction angle have self-correlation. As for mutual-correlation, the cohesion and internal friction angle in the same layer soil have mutual-correlation,but they didn't have among different layer soils. Some calculations are carried out to investigate the influences of self-correlation and mutual-correlation of shear strength index on the reliability index. For convenience, only the reliability index of the dangerous gliding plane is given, and the dangerous gliding plane is searched by the safety coefficient method. From the numerical results, it can be seen that the self-correlation and mutual-correlation of shear strength index have an important effect on the reliability index, and that reliability index can not be obtained sometime when the JC method is used to analyze slope stability.
