An Improved Distributed Image Compression Algorithm for Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks

In Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks(WMSNs),it is difficult for a resource constrained sensor node to process and transmit the images directly.Based on the distributed and incremental image compression algorithm(DICA),an improved image compression algorithm based on in-cluster distributed processing(ICDP)is proposed in this paper.By using the energy priority selection principle,auxiliary sensor nodes are selected in each cluster to complete the multi-level wavelet transform of JPEG2000,thus achieving the distributed image processing and compression.Simulation results demonstrate that the ICDP algorithm can improve the energy balance and the network lifetime of sensor nodes when compared to the DICA algorithm.Therefore the ICDP algorithm is more suitable for the resource-constrained WMSNs with high nodes density.
